The College of Saint Benedict ice hockey team (0-0 MIAC, 1-0-0 overall) scored two goals in the final period before winning the game in overtime 3-2 against the University of Wisconsin-Superior tonight at the MAC in Saint Cloud. First-year
Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area) continued on her terror by scoring two goals, including the game winner. She now has scored four goals in the past three games.
CSB was able to turn the game around after they emerged from the locker room down 2-0 to start the third period. Sophomore
Holly Reinking (Maple Grove, MN, Elk River) drew a key penalty from Superior leading to first-year
Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) first collegiate goal eight seconds into the third period. Three minutes later, Graske tied the game up scoring while being assisted by Ernst and first-year
Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids). The Blazers then turned to sophomore goalie
Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) who made some spectacular saves toward the end of the game to force overtime where with just over a minute left, Graske again scored on an assist by Ernst sending Saint Benedict to the victory over nationally ranked Superior.
Head coach Pat Michaud had nothing but good things to say about the win. "Our big key in the win was getting contributions from everybody," he said. "We were a little worried how we would recover from the games last weekend, but coming out in the third, you could tell we had the legs. The quick goal gave us confidence, and getting this win against a team ranked sixth in the nation is a huge win and something to build upon."
The team travels to Ridder Arena in Saint Paul on Thursday to take on the College of Saint Catherine in a non-conference game. The puck drops at 7:05pm.
