With two of their fellow Blazer teams already recording a win, the College of Saint Benedict ice hockey team (1-1-0 MIAC, 3-1 overall) made it a Blazer sweep with their 2-1 victory tonight over Saint Olaf. Rebounding after a tough loss the night before, CSB tightened up their defense and was able to control the flow and pace of the game.
With all the action coming in the first period for both teams, the Blazers held onto the win for their first victory in the MIAC this season. Sophomore center Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) opened up the game scoring at 1:03 into the first period. Leyendecker was assisted by first-year defender Rachel Welz (Oconomowoc, WI, Oconomowoc) and sophomore forward Holly Reinking (Maple Grove, MN, Elk River). Just under four minutes later Welz added her own goal unassisted, putting the Blazers up 2-0. Sophomore goalie Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) returned to the ice for CSB stopping 20 of 21 shots.
The team's next game is away as they take on Bethel at the Bethel University Arena on November 21. Face-off is scheduled for 7 pm. The Blazers next home game comes at 2 pm November 22 at the MAC in Saint Cloud. CSB will be finishing their series with Bethel.
