ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team played its closest game of the season last week, and needed a big game to pull out the win to head into Thanksgiving break undefeated.
Carla Meyer came through with the big game the team needed. The sophomore point guard had a career night against the Yellowjackets to help the Bennies hold on for the win and head into December with a 4-0 record. For her impressive performance, Meyer is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Meyer – who recorded a career-best 18 points in the pre-Thanksgiving win – started the game with a three and a fast-break layup to get Saint Benedict off to a hot start and spark a 9-1 run for CSB. She added another three and another fastbreak basket to give the Bennies a one-point lead heading into the second quarter. Ten of Meyer’s 18 points came in the first quarter to help her team hold off the Yellowjackets early.
Meyer added four more points in the second quarter, and then had several key plays late in the game – including a late steal that led to a fastbreak layup for teammate Madison Doran to put the Bennies up two late in the third.
Along with a career-best 18 points, Meyer also tied her career-high with eight rebounds. She added three steals and two assists to her daily stat line, and finished the game shooting better than 53 percent from the field at a 7-for-13 clip.
So far this season, Meyer leads the team in scoring (13.5) and is second on the team in rebounds per game (7.3). She also has a team-high 14 rebounds and has eight steals. She is 11
th in the MIAC in scoring, eighth in rebounds and is tied for fourth in the conference in total assists.
Meyer and her teammates get back to MIAC action Wednesday, Dec. 1, when it hosts Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m. The Bennies also host Concordia Saturday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch.
