Alex Johnson - Performance You May Have Missed

**With no games being played in Spring 2020 and therefore no performances to highlight for CSB's Athlete of the Week, CSB athletics will instead be featuring Performances You May Have Missed from all sports throughout the 2019-20 school year. These individual performances may have been overshadowed by another teammate's performance in that game, or maybe didn't earn Athlete of the Week honors at the time because of another deserving honoree. This weekly post will be used to highlight and honor athletes over the course of the spring.**

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – For each of the past two seasons, Alex Johnson was known around the MIAC for her rebounding abilities and her presence in the paint, especially on the defensive side of the game.

As a senior for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team in 2019-20, Johnson was once again one of the league’s top rebounders, but she also led the conference in another defensive category – one that is more flashy, but can sometimes be overlooked.

Johnson led the MIAC and finished in the top 50 nationally in both total blocks and blocks per game as a senior in 2019-20. She recorded a career-best 57 blocks – more than 30 ahead of the second-place total in the MIAC. She finished the season averaging 2.3 blocks per game, also good for best in the MIAC.

Out of 25 games played, Johnson recorded at least one block in all but one, and she finished with three or more blocks on nine occasions. She had a career performance on the defensive side of the ball in the team’s biggest win of the season on Jan. 29 when it upset No. 23 Gustavus on the road in St. Peter.

That night, Johnson recorded a career-high six blocks, including a block with 2:26 remaining that led to a defensive rebound and a layup for CSB to put the Bennies up six, 59-53, with just over two minutes left. She finished with three blocks in the fourth quarter alone to help the Bennies beat the Gusties and avenge one of their losses from earlier in the year. Johnson’s six blocks in St. Peter is the most for CSB since Niki Fokken finished with eight against Hamline in January 2017.

Johnson started her senior season with a career-high 22 points in a win at UW-River Falls on Nov. 11, and she recorded a career-best 19 rebounds on Dec. 7 in a road win at Hamline.

Johnson’s 57 blocked shots as a senior is the seventh-most blocks in a season in CSB history. She graduates sixth in program history with 148 total blocks and 1.4 blocks per game. After finishing second in the MIAC with 8.2 rebounds per game, Johnson also finishes ninth in CSB history with 551 rebounds. She scored 564 points in four years, and shot .475 from the field.
