  • Title
    Assistant Hockey Coach - Goalies
Cal Herold is entering his third season as an assistant coach with CSB in 2020-21. His responsibilities are to oversee the development of the Saint Benedict goaltenders.

In his first season with CSB, he led the trio of senior Julia Carle, sophomore Kailee Medved and first year Maggie Gilchrist to a combined save percentage of 0.916, the highest Saint Benedict has seen in the last decade. Under Herold’s direction, Carle, Medved, and Gilchrist put up a 2.72 GAA, the second lowest for the program in the last 10 years. Herold also helped guide Medved to Saint Benedict’s first MIAC Athlete of the Week honor since 2017, after she put up 40 saves in a 1-1 OT tie at Augsburg. Medved finished the season ranked fourth in the MIAC in both save percentage (0.923) and goals against (27).

In 2019-20, Herold watched as first-year goalie Ally Frantzick earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention after recorded 403 saves - good for fifth in the MIAC - and just missed the school record for save percentage with a .926.

A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Herold spent his prep career playing for St. Cloud Cathedral High school. During his tenure at Cathedral, the Crusaders were four-time conference champions, two-time section champions and appeared in the Minnesota State Boy’s High School Hockey Tournament twice.

Herold comes to Saint Benedict with a robust coaching resume. He has found success coaching players of all ages and skill levels; coaching goalies to the youth hockey District and Regional Tournaments, the Minnesota State Boy’s High School Hockey Tournament, USHL, and NA3HL. In 2019, Herold and the Crusaders won the Class A Minnesota State Boy’s High School Hockey Tournament.

Herold earned his Bachelor’s Degree from St. John’s University in 2014 and is employed by Blattner Energy in Avon, Minn. He and his wife, Alli, reside in St. Joseph.
