PORTLAND, Ore. — The College of Saint Benedict (8-6) got strong pitching performances but fell twice to Lewis & Clark (9-7) on Wednesday, dropping 1-0 and 2-1 decisions. The Bennies are now 2-2 on their Oregon trip.
Both seniors
Olivia Wallace (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Ellie Peterson (St. Anthony Village, Minn.) threw complete games but lost in the final at bat, as Lewis & Clark delivered walk-off hits in both games.
Lewis & Clark 1, Saint Benedict 0
In the opener, Saint Benedict was edged, 1-0, after Lewis & Clark used a two-out single from Madison Scroggins to score Makena Dahir for the game-winning run.
The Bennies managed just one hit, a double from
Olivia Van Hout (Mahtomedi, Minn.).
Peterson allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts in a complete-game effort, falling to 3-4 on the season with a 3.41 ERA. She recorded her fourth complete game this year and now has 40 complete games (7th all-time at CSB) in 77 career appearances (6th all-time at CSB).
Lewis & Clark 2, Saint Benedict 1
In game two, Lewis & Clark had a walk-off hit for the second straight game to complete the sweep on a game-winning hit by Madison Scroggins.
Saint Benedict tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Lauren Freeburg (Rogers, Minn.), scoring pinch runner
Adison Border (Blaine, Minn.) in the sixth inning. The Bennies later loaded the bases in the seventh inning but couldn't push across the go-ahead run.
Wallace turned in a strong outing, allowing one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 6.1 innings. She dropped to 3-1 on the season, recording her second complete game and moving to a 3.54 ERA. It marked her 18th career complete game in her 62nd appearance.
At the plate,
Cat Smetana (Lake Elmo, Minn.), Van Hout, and Lilly Treml each had two hits, while
Bryn Ruhberg (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Freeburg added one apiece in an eight-hit effort. Van Hout raised her batting average to .382, while Treml is hitting .378 on the season.
Saint Benedict returns to action Thursday against No. 8 Linfield at Del Smith Stadium in McMinnville, Ore., with a doubleheader scheduled for 6 and 8 p.m. (CST).
