ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team (11-9, 3-1 MIAC) split a doubleheader with Concordia-Moorhead (13-7, 1-3 MIAC) on Tuesday, April 8, at the CSB Softball Field.
Bryn Ruhberg hit her team-leading fourth home run, while
Olivia Wallace delivered a career-best performance with nine strikeouts and a complete game to secure a 7-0 win in game two. In game one, the Bennies fell, 1-0, in a tightly contested match, as Concordia scored an unearned run late to claim the victory.
In the doubleheader, Saint Benedict received stellar pitching performances from juniors
Ellie Peterson and Wallace. The team combined for two complete games, allowing just seven hits and one earned run over 14 innings, with 12 strikeouts and only two walks.
Game 1 – Concordia 1, Saint Benedict 0
Ellie Peterson (4-5) threw a complete game, surrendering only two hits and an unearned run while striking out three, but suffered the 1-0 loss in the opener. Concordia's Bayleigh Frye (7-2) also delivered a solid outing, allowing eight hits and striking out two. Peterson's performance marked her sixth complete game of the season and the 26th of her career.
The St. Ben's' offense was led by junior
Cat Smetana with three hits, while first-year
Lily Treml added two hits.
Concordia scored the only run in the sixth inning, and the Bennies threatened in the seventh with two runners on base, but Frye closed out the game.
Game 2 – Saint Benedict 7, Concordia 0
In the second game,
Olivia Wallace (5-2) dominated the mound, striking out nine and scattering five hits over seven innings for her third complete game of the season and the 11th of her career. Ruhberg sparked the offense with two hits, including her fourth home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.
Smetana continued her strong day, adding two more hits, and the team finished with 10 hits from eight different players. Ruhberg's solo homer in the third inning broke the 0-0 tie, and the Bennies added three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to seal the win.
With her performance, she registered her fifth win (10
th of her career) and dropped her ERA to 2.35.
Next, the Bennies will face St. Olaf in a MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9, at 3:30/5:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
