ROCHESTER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team capped a standout three-day run at the Rochester Invite on Saturday, finishing eighth out of 10 teams with 637 points—and finished with four school records, including three by junior
Haley Zelen, and nine top-10 school program marks.
Zelen (Shakopee, Minn.) delivered one of the meet's defining performances, shattering her third individual school record of the weekend. Her winning time of 50.79 in the 100-yard freestyle erased the previous program mark of 52.11, set by Steph Bierman back in 2013. The junior, already the school record-holder in the 50 free (23.07) and 100 fly (54.72), also helped set a program relay record in the 200 medley (1:46.69). Her blistering 100 free added a third NCAA Division III B-cut to her résumé.
She nearly helped rewrite another line of the record book as well. Zelen teamed with
Mary Morris (St. Cloud, Minn.),
Anna Schottler (Chanhassen, Minn.) and
Jayda Alholm (Little Falls, Minn.) for a 3:34.00 finish in the 400 freestyle relay—just shy of the program mark set in 2022. The group placed sixth overall.
Elsewhere in the pool, first-year standout
Josey Larson (Hastings, Minn.) claimed eighth in the 200 butterfly with a 2:14.27, a time that now sits fifth in CSB history.
Morris turned in one of the team's top individual finishes of the day, racing to third in the 200 backstroke in 2:06.95, nearly two seconds faster than her season best. Behind her, senior
Lauren Sitzman (Omaha, Neb.) dropped seven seconds to finish 15th in 2:14.85, while first-year Maddie Tillmann clocked a personal-best 2:17.78 for 23rd.
In the 200 breaststroke, first-year
Bella Kern (Delano, Minn.) cut almost nine seconds off her lifetime best to take 15th in 2:31.81. Senior
Megan Bartels (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished 24th in 2:39.15.
Distance events brought more personal milestones. Senior
Morgan Stout posted a career-best 18:36.89 to place 15th in the 1,650 free. First-year teammate
Maddie Brynda (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) also notched a career mark of 19:22.20, good for 29th.
Kern and fellow first-year
Lydia Jostock (Delano, Minn.) added personal bests in the 100 IM, finishing 20th (1:04.52) and 18th (1:04.22), respectively. In the 200 fly, first-year
Izzy Green (Hastings, Minn.) was 21st with a personal-best 2:23.57.
Away from the pool, the Bennies also made noise on the boards at the Roger Ahlman Invite hosted by Macalester College.
Abby Stevens (St. Cloud, Minn.) placed fourth in one-meter diving with 256.70 points, while
Emma Netland (Moorhead, Minn.) took second on the three-meter board with 270.25.
CSB now enters a month-long break before returning to action Jan. 17 in a dual meet at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn.
