Zelen Makes Record-Breaking Debut; Named MIAC Swimmer of the Week

10/14/2025

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – It didn't take long for Haley Zelen to make a splash at the College of Saint Benedict. In her first meet as a Bennie, the junior transfer from Division I Wisconsin delivered a historic performance at the St. Catherine Pentathlon on October 11—one that included two broken school records, and earned her MIAC Swimmer of the Week honors.

Zelen, a Shakopee native, claimed the individual title with 413 points, winning four of the five events she swam and rewriting the CSB record books in the process. Her efforts also earned her recognition as The House / St. Cloud Orthopedics CSB Athlete of the Week on Monday. She's the first Bennie to be named MIAC Swimmer of the Week since Megan Bartels in November 2024.

Against a competitive field that included Division II and III programs, Zelen led CSB to a second-place team finish with 5,150.5 points—trailing only Division II Concordia-St. Paul (6,514) and finishing ahead of St. Catherine (3,874) and Hamline (911.5).

Her dominance started in the 100-yard butterfly, where she stopped the clock at 57.09 seconds, shattering Ellen Dean's 2011 school record of 59.13. Zelen wasn't done. In the 100 individual medley, she posted a time of 59.76 seconds—more than a second faster than the previous CSB mark set by Anna Birklid in 2021 (1:00.80).

She followed with a win in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:08.56—good for 10th on CSB's all-time leaderboard—and claimed the 100 freestyle in 53.19 seconds, the third-fastest time in program history.

Her only runner-up finish came in the 100 backstroke, where she placed second with a time of 1:00.63. Even so, her all-around performance was enough to earn her the meet's overall individual title, besting a field of 82 swimmers.

Zelen and her teammates return to action on Saturday, October 18, for the CSB/SJU Fall Invitational, held at the Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville.
