Game Preview -- CSB Hockey set to face UW-Superior for third time this year

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (6-3-2) will host UW-Superior (4-6-1) in the third matchup between the teams this season at Ritsche Arena on Tuesday Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.

CSB, directed by third year head coach Lindsay Macy, has started the season with a 4-1-1 MIAC play record for third place with 12 points and a 6-3-2 overall record.  Over the past seven games, the Bennies have a 6-1-1 record. On Dec. 6-7, CSB split a home and road series with Bethel. St. Ben's took a 2-0 loss at home on Dec. 6 before bouncing back with a 4-1 road win at Bethel. In the win, CSB had goals from Shae Stinnett, Camryn Hargreaves, Ava Stinnett, and Jenna Timm.

Quick Review
St. Benedict opened the season with a loss to No. 1 and defending national DIII champion UW-River Falls (1-0), 8-2 in River Falls, Wis. Then CSB took a 5-4 road loss to UW-Superior on Nov. 5 as first-year Camryn Hargreaves had two goals. On Nov. 12, the Bennies and UW-Superior played to a 2-2 tie (Yellowjackets had a 2-0 advantage in the shootout for the point). On Nov. 15-16, the Bennies rebounded by winning a 2-1 overtime decision at St. Scholastica and then scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-0 win against the Saints a night later. The Bennies defeated St. Olaf, 2-1 in overtime on the road on Nov. 22 and had a 2-2 draw with the Oles at home on Nov. 23 in which CSB earned the two conference points with a 1-0 verdict in the overtime shootout (Ella Tuccitto goal).

Prior to Thanksgiving (Nov. 26-27) the Bennies dominated a two-game nonconference series with Northland where they won 5-0 and 7-0. In the victories, goalies Delaney Norman and Ellynor Haack recorded shutouts as she has three overall this season. First-year Camryn Hargreaves had three goals and Skylar Salscheider had four assists to lead the way. CSB recorded a season-high seven goals in the second win against Northland, which Salscheider had three assists and Hargreaves scored two goals.

Through 11 games, St. Benedict has totaled 35 goals (3.2) and allowed 22 (2.0). The Bennies have outshot their opponents, 393 to 210. In goal, CSB has 230 saves, with opponents at 358. In power plays, CSB has had a 23.8% power play rate while their opponents aur R 11.8%. CSB has won 341 face-offs and lost 292 for a 53.9 %-win rate.

UW-Superior Notes
In her first season as head coach, Bre Simon leads the UW-Superior Yellowjackets to a 4-6-1 record this season. The Yellowjackets went 1-4 since the last meetup with the Bennies, dropping a 1-0 OT loss against St. Scholastica and recording a 6-0 win against Northland. The Yellowjackets are led by senior Jenna Hoops with four goals and five  assists for a team-high of nine points. Senior Cora Coz leads the team with five goals on the season. In net, senior Molly Black owns a .905 save percentage for a total of 133 saves this season.

Series Notes
When CSB meets UW-Superior on Tuesday evening, the teams will play for the 21st time. CSB has an overall record of 5-14-1 against UW-Superior. CSB has a 3-6-1 home record when playing the Yellowjackets. In their last meeting on November 12, 2024, the Bennies tied the Yellowjackets 2-2 in St. Cloud, Minn.

Player Notes
Sophomore forward Shae Stinnett leads CSB with nine points, which is fifth in the MIAC. She has five goals, which is tied for fourth in the MIAC and four assists. First-year Skylar Salscheider is tied first in the MIAC with her eight assists and ranks fourth in the league with 0.73 assists per game. First-year Camryn Hargreaves has netted seven goals, which is tied for first in the league. She has two assists which gives her nine points, a total for tied with Stinnett for fifth in the MIAC. Sophomore Ella Tuccitto has six points, including two goals and four assists while junior Chloe Lewis has five points with three goals and two assists.

Senior goaltender, Kate Moffat, who was the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 18, ranks eighth in the MIAC with a .909 saves percentage with 15 goals allowed and 150 saves in seven games. Her goal against average of 2.45 is eighth in the MIAC. She is seventh in the MIAC with 21.43 saves per game.

Senior forward Ava Stinnett, who has two goals this season, played in 77 career games, scoring 27 goals, and recording 25assists, with 228 shots on goal. She ranks 11th all-time at CSB in goals scored.

Senior forward Aurora Opsahl has two goals and three assists this season with five points and 34 shots. With 32 goals, she ranks tied for sixth all-time at CSB with Kelly Wegwerth, 1998-99; Brigette Miller, 2014-18; and Erin Baldwin, 2003-07.  She has totaled 61 points, which also places her seventh all-time at CSB with Brigette Miller (2014-18). Opsahl is coming off seasons of 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 2022-23 and 13 goals and seven assists in 2023-24. She also has 268 career shots and eight game-winning goals, which places her tied with Susan Engel (2001-05) for the career lead.

When Jenna Timm recorded her 32nd assist against St. Olaf, she moved into seventh all-time for assists. To move up to sixth all-time (Elli Marvin, 2013-17), she needs three more assists. After scoring her first goal of the season in the 4-1 win on the road over Bethel, Timm has 13 career goals. She has three assists this season.
