ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team has already had a busy week, but the team doesn't get any time to rest this weekend. After going 3-1 in a pair of doubleheaders during the week, the Bennies are on the road twice this weekend for two more MIAC doubleheaders.
CSB is in St. Paul both days as it takes on St. Kate's at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, and Hamline at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 24. Live stats and video are available for both games.
About the Wildcats
St. Kate's has won five of its last six games after sweeping Carleton Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats are 17-11 overall and 10-4 in the MIAC – just below the Bennies in the conference standings. Taylor Brunn leads the MIAC with 41 hits, and she leads the team with a .406 batting average. Alyssa Montero is batting .393 with 33 hits and 19 RBIs, and she is fourth in the league with 83 strikeouts.
About the Pipers
Hamline has lost four of its last five games, including a 6-4 loss to Bethel Thursday in a makeup of a shortened doubleheader from earlier in the season. The Pipers are 13-11 overall and 4-7 in the MIAC. Dana Rosbacka is fourth in the MIAC with a 2.89 ERA in just over 46 innings pitched, and both Jenna and Megan Rubbelke are in the top 10 in the MIAC with batting averages of .410 or better.
Last Meeting
CSB swept St. Kate's last season, winning 14-0 and 8-0 in five innings in St. Joseph. Eleven of the team's 17 hits went for extra bases in the 14-0 win and
Jordyn Swoboda was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. CSB added 10 more hits in the 8-0 win.
CSB also swept Hamline, winning 8-0 in five innings and then holding on for a 2-0 win in St. Paul.
Tori Harren went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a homer in the five-inning win, and
Katie Carlson and
Bryn Carlstrom both had RBIs to help the team complete the sweep.
The Storyline
The Bennie offense was on fire Thursday, but St. Olaf held on for a win in Game 1 as the two teams split a big MIAC doubleheader in Northfield. The split leave CSB in third in the MIAC at 9-2 with just over a week left to play in the regular season, so the Bennies are looking at every game as a must-win situation from here on out.
Who to Watch
The Bennies have had two grand slams so far this week –
Lizzy Walker hit one Tuesday against Macalester and Carlstrom's first collegiate home run was a grand slam Thursday in the team's second-game win at St. Olaf.
Megan Rasmussen and Swoboda both had two homers, and
Lexi Hanson also homered against the Oles.
Elly Novak stayed perfect at 12-0 as she helped the team beat the Oles 11-1 in five innings in Game 2.
