CSB plays through two wild days in Arizona

03/08/2020

TUCSON, Ariz. – It turns out a come-from-behind, extra-innings win against Wash U on Friday wouldn't be the craziest game for the College of Saint Benedict's time in Arizona.

Saturday, the Bennies were down by as many as nine runs against Berry before making a comeback and eventually falling 12-10. The team's second game of the day was halted due to the city of Tucson's light curfew and finished Sunday morning, and both of Sunday's games were canceled due to rain and poor field conditions.

CSB is now 6-7 overall and has one game remaining in Arizona before heading back home to St. Joseph Monday night.

Saturday against Berry, the Bennies gave up nine runs in the third inning and the Vikings threatened to end the game early. Mo Burns doubled in the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Alex Smith to make it 9-1, and CSB kept chipping away at the lead for the next several innings. CSB scored twice more in the fifth on a two-run double from Sheridan Glashan, but Berry (8-2) threatened to end the game early again when it scored twice more in the top of the sixth to make it 11-3.

First year Gabby Spencer kept the game alive again with a two-run homer – the first of her CSB career – in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-5, but the Vikings added one more run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to seven, 12-5. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Bennies scored five runs on four hits, two walks and an error to get within two runs before the final out was made. Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks, and Jordyn Swoboda made it a two-run game with a bases-clearing double before Berry was able to end the game.

Ella Eibensteiner had three hits for CSB, which finished with 15 total hits. Four other players finished with multiple hits. Grace Gilmore threw the first two innings and took the loss after giving up five runs – two earned – on seven hits. Alex Smith threw the final five innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits.

In the team's second game of the day against No. 3 Linfield, CSB was down 3-0 when the game was halted in the top of the sixth with two outs due to the city of Tucson's 10:30 p.m. light curfew. The Wildcats scored one run in each of the first three innings, and CSB got runners to third twice, but failed to score.

When the game was resumed Sunday morning, CSB had a runner on second, and Spencer walked to put two runners on. Olivia McCabe tied the game with a three-run homer over the center-field fence. CSB's defense held Linfield scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcat defense did the same to the Bennies in the top of the seventh. Ally Hjort got a groundout and a strikeout to start the bottom of the inning, but Linfield hit two singles – including a walkoff RBI single – to end the game.

Swoboda had two of CSB's five hits against Linfield, and McCabe had a trio of RBIs after hitting her third homer of the trip. Hjort took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits. She struck out six batters in 6.2 innings of work.

CSB was scheduled to play a pair of top-five opponents Sunday afternoon, but both games were canceled due to unexpected rain all morning and poor field conditions at Tucson's Lincoln Park. Saint Benedict has one game left in Arizona – a 2 p.m. CDT game against Pitt.-Bradford.
