CSB softball drops two close games to start Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a pair of tight games on its first day of its spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. The Bennies started the day with a 5-3 loss to Ohio Northern, then fell 2-1 in nine innings to Alvernia to wrap up the first day of competition.

In the nine-inning loss to Alvernia, the Golden Wolves (4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a CSB error, a sac bunt and a single, and then another Bennie error. Saint Benedict (2-2) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when, with two outs, Olivia McCabe singled, stole second then came around to score on an RBI single from Kendra Swanson.

That's where the score stayed through regulation despite a seventh-inning double from Hannah Sundem. With the international rule in play, both teams got a runner to third in the eighth but failed to score. Alvernia moved their runner from second to third on a sac bunt in the ninth, and scored the eventual game-winning run two batters later thanks to an RBI double. CSB struck out in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Swanson and Jordyn Swoboda both finished 2-for-4 to lead CSB, which had seven hits. Ally Hjort took the loss after throwing all nine innings despite not giving up a single earned run and scattering five hits over nine innings. She struck out six batters to start her junior season.

In the first game of the day, both teams got off to a fast start, but a big inning from Ohio Northern gave the Polar Bears the edge in the end.

ONU (1-1) scored a pair of runs – both unearned - in the first inning thanks to a pair of CSB errors and two walks. The Bennies were scoreless in the first inning, but responded with two unearned runs of their own in the second when Swoboda singled, Mo Burns reached on an error to score Swoboda, and Burns came around to score on an RBI double from Sheridan Glashan.

The score stayed tied 2-2 until the bottom of the fourth when the Polar Bears scored a trio of runs on four hits and another CSB error. Saint Benedict attempted to mount a rally in the top of the seventh with a pair of walks and an RBI single from McCabe, but a double play ended the game.

McCabe finished the first game of the day 3-for-4 with an RBI and four other players had a hit for the Bennies. Three different players saw time on the mound for CSB. Lauren York started the game and gave up a pair of runs on two hits, and Alex Smith ended up taking the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Grace Gilmore threw the final three innings and gave up a single hit.

CSB returns to action Monday with a pair of games. The team takes on #8 Trine (1-1) at 9:15 a.m. CDT and Wartburg (2-0) at 1:45 p.m. CDT in Clermont.
