Big bats lead CSB to season-opening sweep

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Big bats and timely hits helped the College of Saint Benedict softball team open its season with a nonconference sweep of Bethany Lutheran Thursday night. The Bennies won 10-2 and 9-1 – both in five innings – to start the season at the SJU Dome.

Seven different players recorded a hit in each game as the team finished the night with 20 total hits, including six doubles and one home run.

In the first game of the night, the Vikings (1-3) took a 2-0 lead after one inning thanks to a home run and a passed ball, but CSB (2-0) took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning thanks to two-run doubles from Mo Burns and Jordyn Swoboda and a two-run homer from Sheridan Glashan. Kendra Swanson added an RBI groundout in the second inning and Gabby Spencer did the same in the third, and Lizzy Walker scored on a wild pitch later in the third to make it 9-2. CSB ended the game early when Lexi Braaten stole home in the fifth to make it 10-2.

Spencer, Olivia McCabe and Glashan both finished with two hits for CSB, and Burns, Swoboda and Glashan each had two RBIs. Sophomore Grace Gilmore struck out seven and picked up the win after giving up a single earned run on four hits in five innings of work.

The second game of the night was much less eventful to start, but a busy fifth inning ended the game early. Burns had an RBI single in the third to get CSB on the board, and the Bennies took a 2-0 lead in the fourth thanks to an RBI sac fly from Spencer. The Vikings made it a one-run game on an RBI double in the fifth, but CSB broke the game open – and ended it early – with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Swoboda hit her second two-run double of the night to get the scoring started in the fifth, Glashan added a two-run single to her resume for the night and Lauren York also came through with a two-run single. The game ended when Swanson reached on an error and one run scored to put Saint Benedict up eight.

McCabe finished 3-for-3 to lead CSB in game two, and Glashan went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. First year Elly Novak threw all five innings and struck out two to pick up the first win of her CSB career. She gave up a single run on five hits.

Saint Benedict is off now until it gets to Florida for the team's annual spring break trip. CSB's first game down south is against Ohio Northern at 1:45 p.m. CDT on Sunday, March 1, in Clermont, Fla.
