Basketball travels to take on ranked Gusties

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is looking to turn its week around after a tough 66-49 loss to Carleton Saturday. The Bennies travel to St. Peter on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to play No. 23 Gustavus Adolphus. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
 
About the Gusties
Gustavus has had a solid year overall, and the Gusties lead the conference defensively, holding opponents to a 26.5 three-point percentage – the lowest in the conference. They are ranked No. 23 in the nation and have an overall record of 14-3 and 10-2 in the MIAC. Their conference loses come from back-to-back games, first against Bethel and then Concordia. Leading scorer for the Gusties is Kendall Thompson who is averaging 14.3 per game. Justine Lee is right behind her with 13 per game and Paige Richert also averages double digits with 10 per game. Thompson also leads the team in rebounds, assists, and blocked shots.
 
Last Meeting
These teams met earlier this season in Saint Joseph, and the Gusties came away with a 67-57 win. Three of Saint Ben's players shot double digits that game, Megan Thompson led with 14 points, Sidney Schiffler had 13 and Paris Rasheed-Moore had 11.  Overall against Gustavus, CSB is 40-22 and 19-10 away. They average 64.77 points per game.
 
Story Line
With only eight games left in the regular season, the College of Saint Benedict is hoping to get a win and gain some momentum. They are 8-9 overall and 4-8 in the conference. Winning this game would help them to move up in conference rankings as well as put them at .500 overall this season. Later this week, the Bennies look to host Hamline on Saturday, then they travel to both St. Olaf and Augsburg – another ranked team – next week.
 
Who to Watch
Schiffler and Thompson are both averaging double digits in scoring; Schiffler at 10.1 points per game with 172 total and Thompson with 11.7 points per game and 187 total. Alex Johnson has 34 blocks this season and 141 rebounds. CSB is averaging 62.8 points overall per game and 35.6 rebounds per game.
