ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – A walk-off RBI single and a one-hitter helped the College of Saint Benedict softball team come away with a MIAC split with Gustavus Saturday afternoon.
After falling 6-3 in 10 innings in the first game of the day, Gilmore allowed just five base runners and
Lizzy Walker sent a single over the head of the second baseman and just in front of the right fielder to help the team win 1-0 after a scoreless 6.5 innings.
CSB (16-7, 4-3) left two runners stranded in the third and sixth innings, but couldn't get any runs across. Gilmore walked four batters and gave up a single in the top of the seventh, but held on to pick up her third win of the season. In the bottom of the seventh, Gilmore and
Emilie Antony walked and
Madison Mikolich reached on a fielder's choice. Antony came around to score the lone run of the game on Walker's bloop single to end the game in CSB's favor.
Kate Deming finished with two of CSB's four hits and Walker had two hits, including the game winner. Gilmore gave up a single hit and struck out four batters in seven innings of work.
The first game of the day took nearly three hours and lasted 10 innings before a winner was decided. CSB scored one in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by
Kendra Swanson. CSB stranded three runners in the inning. The Gusties (12-10, 3-4) tied the game with a double and an RBI sac fly in the second, and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run homer.
CSB got one run back thanks to a long single from
Claire Boatman and another RBI single from Swanson, and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Deming singled and came around to score on an RBI double by Boatman. Boatman was left at second, however, to send the game to extras. Both teams got a runner in the eighth, and Gustavus got two runners in the ninth and Walker made it to second for CSB, but neither team was able to score.
The Gusties' first batter reached on an error in the 10
th, the next batter walked and one run scored on an RBI single. CSB got the second out of the inning on a sac bunt, but two runs came around to score on an RBI single to put Gustavus up 6-3. Swanson was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the inning, but CSB hit into a double play and a strikeout ended the game.
Deming, Boatman and Swanson all had two hits for CSB, which finished with seven hits, and Swanson had to RBIs.
Ally Hjort threw all seven innings and picked up her first loss of the season after giving up six runs – three earned – on nine hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts.
CSB is back in action right away Sunday, April 7, when it travels to St. Paul to take on Hamline, which swept Saint Mary's Saturday.
