DECORAH, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict softball team got two of everything Saturday.
Two impressive pitching performances from
Alex Smith. Two, two-run home runs from senior
Sara Wennerstrand. And two wins on Day 2 of the Decorah, Iowa Regional to send the team to Sunday's championship game.
CSB beat Lake Forest 7-0 to start the day and avenged Friday's loss with a 6-1 victory over Cornell to advance to Sunday, where the team takes on host-school Luther. The first game is at noon, and if CSB wins a second game will follow. Saint Benedict must win twice to win the region since the Norse head into Sunday undefeated so far.
Saturday's first win marked the first NCAA Tournament victory for any sport at CSB since the volleyball team went 1-1 in its 2013 NCAA Tournament appearance.
CSB – which is now 36-9 – jumped on Lake Forest early in Game 1. With two outs, CSB got a single and two walks, and on run scored on an error and Wennerstrand drove in two runs with a long double. Wennerstrand made it 5-0 two innings later thanks to a two-run homer over the right-center field fence, and CSB scored on an error in the fourth and
Claire Boatman had an RBI double in the sixth to make it 7-0.
Wennerstrand finished Game 1 2-for-4 with four RBIs and
Olivia Olson added two hits. Smith threw seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits throughout the game with eight strikeouts.
Both Smith and Wennerstrand were back at it again in Game 2 against the Rams as Smith threw six shutout innings and gave up a single run in the seventh inning. Wennerstrand added a second two-run homer to her resume along with an RBI double.
Smith had an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 in the top of the first, and CSB maintained a 1-0 lead until the sixth when Wennerstrand hit her second homer and
Kate Deming had an RBI sac fly. Wennerstrand and Smith both had RBI doubles in the seventh, and Cornell got on the board with an RBI sac fly in the bottom of the inning.
Wennerstrand was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to finish the day 5-for-8 with seven RBIs. Smith added two hits and two RBIs and
Kendra Swanson finished with two hits for CSB, which had 12 total hits. Smith finished the having given up one run on 13 hits with 11 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.
After a big day Saturday, CSB has to win two more Sunday as Luther heads into the championship game undefeated. The Norse are 37-8 with an 11-3, six-inning win over Lake Forest Friday and a 6-0, one-hit shutout over Cornell Saturday. Luther heads into Sunday having won five straight and six of its last seven games.
