CSB’s offense comes alive in sweep of Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a pair of one-run wins against Hamline Tuesday, the College of Saint Benedict softball team wasn't going to let things get that close again Wednesday. CSB exploded for 13 hits and 14 runs in a 14-3, six-inning win in the first game against Macalester, and wrapped up the sweep with a 9-3 win in Game 2 in St. Paul, Minn.

Saint Benedict is now 26-6 overall and 13-3 in the MIAC with three doubleheaders left in the regular season. Saint Benedict is currently third in the league behind St. Thomas (19-1) and St. Kate's (12-2).

CSB scored four runs in the first inning of the first game thanks to an RBI single from Emilie Antony, a two-run double from Karlee Pfaff and a pair of errors on the Scots. Macalester got one run back thanks to two CSB errors in the second inning, and made it a one-run game with a two-run double in the third.

That's as close as Macalester would get, however, as Olivia Olson hit a two-run single and Pfaff had an RBI double in the fifth to make it 7-3, and CSB exploded for seven runs in the sixth to end the game early. CSB had five hits – including a two-run double from Sara Wennerstrand and a two-run single from Pfaff – and took advantage of one Macalester error.

Pfaff finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead CSB. Kate Deming, Megan Toninato and Alex Smith all had two hits, and Olson and Wennerstrand both had a pair of RBIs. Smith picked up the win on the mound after giving up just three runs on five hits with five strikeouts, and Kiela DeVlaeminck gave up a single hit in the final inning.

Saint Benedict jumped on the Scots early in game two, doing all of its scoring in the first three innings. Antony had an RBI single and Pfaff added another RBI double to her resume for the day to make it 4-0 before the Scots scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. Toninato had an RBI single and Antony sent in a run on a double as part of a two-run second inning for CSB, and the Scots scored for the last time with a single run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3. An error on the left fielder on a hit by Antony sent in three more runs in the third to end the scoring for the game.

Deming, Toninato, Antony and Boatman all had two hits, and Antony and Pfaff both had two RBIs for CSB, which had 10 hits. Jocelyn Metz earned the win after giving up just three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Kadee Vesledahl gave up a single hit in the final two innings of play.

CSB gets two days off before ending the regular season with three doubleheaders in four days. Saint Benedict is at St. Olaf Saturday, April 28, at Saint Mary's Monday and ends the regular season at St. Kate's on Tuesday, May 1.
