ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a doubleheader with Carleton College Sunday afternoon. CSB won the first game 6-2, but fell 8-0 in six innings in the nightcap at the College Avenue field in St. Joseph.
 
After Sunday's games, CSB is 22-6 overall and 9-3 and in third in the MIAC. St. Thomas leads the league at 17-1 and St. Kate's is in second at 10-2.
 
Carleton (9-13, 4-8) took an early 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles in both the first and second innings of the first game, but CSB tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by 
Olivia Olson and an RBI sac fly from 
Karlee Pfaff. Saint Benedict took the lead for good with a three-run fifth innings to go up 5-0. 
Claire Boatman started the inning with a triple, scored on an RBI single by 
Kate Deming, and she scored on an RBI triple from 
Megan Toninato. Toninato scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
 
Boatman wrapped up scoring for the game with a solo home run in the sixth inning. The Knights left the bases loaded in the fourth and had three runners on in the sixth, but 
Alex Smith got a strikeout and a fly out in the fourth and 
Ally Hjort drew a strikeout a groundout and a pop out to end the threat.
 
Hjort picked up the win – her third of the week – giving up just two hits and no runs in the final three innings of the game. 
Kiela DeVlaeminck gave up a pair of runs on five hits in the first two innings, and Smith struck out two and gave up three hits in two innings. 
Emilie Antony and Boatman both went 2-for-3 to lead CSB, which had nine total hits.
 
Saint Benedict had a pair of hits in the first inning, but after that CSB had just two more hits – a single from 
Kendra Swanson in the second and a double from 
Kate Deming in the third, and Antony was CSB's final batter to reach base after getting hit by a pitch in the third inning. Saint Benedict finished the game with just four hits, and the Knights racked up 15 hits – including a two-run homer – and eight runs over six innings.
 
Jocelyn Metz picked up her first loss of the season after giving up a pair of runs on five hits in the first two innings. 
Cassie Meyer gave up six runs on 10 hits in the final four innings.
 
CSB returns home Tuesday, April 24, when it hosts Hamline at 3:30 p.m. in a MIAC doubleheader.
