ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The weather seems to be taking a turn for the better – and for the normal – but the College of Saint Benedict softball team is indoors for at least one more doubleheader this season. CSB - which moved up to No. 16 in the latest NFCA Coaches' Poll - heads to Minneapolis for a pair of MIAC games against Augsburg starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 18.
The conference doubleheader was scheduled to be played in St. Joseph on CSB's new turf field, but after more than six inches of snow over the weekend, the field isn't yet ready. This marks Saint Benedict's fourth conference series of the season, and the fourth series that has been postponed or moved to a new location due to weather or field conditions.
About the Auggies
Augsburg heads into Wednesday's games at 14-12 overall and 6-4 in the MIAC. After winning six straight, the Auggies have lost three of their last four games, including a pair of losses to St. Thomas on Saturday. Anesia King is ninth in the MIAC with a .389 batting average, and Samantha Anderson is third with 31 hits. Anderson is also second among the league's pitchers with eight wins and 87 strikeouts.
Last Year
Saint Benedict pushed its MIAC winning streak to 10 games last season with a sweep of the Auggies. CSB won the first game 6-3, and won its 10th straight game with a 3-2, eight-inning win in the second game.
Claire Boatman bunted in a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 2-2, and
Sara Wennerstrand hit an RBI single in the eighth to give CSB the win.
Cassie Meyer picked up the win in Game 2 after giving up a single run and striking out three in the final three innings.
The Storyline
With the season winding down – and a good chunk of the MIAC schedule remaining for both teams – this becomes crunch time and every conference game is very important. Saint Benedict looks to continue its four-game winning streak and stay near the top of the league, while the Auggies look to get back on track and make a move up in the conference standings. Since there have been so many rescheduled games, the end of the season is busy for both teams as they try to stay healthy heading into the league's postseason tournament.
