CSB dominates No. 5 Trine

TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team picked up the biggest win of head coach Rachael Click's career and the biggest win in recent memory Wednesday afternoon when it upset No. 5 Trine 10-4.

The loss is just the second of the season for Trine, which made it to the NCAA Division III Softball Championships final round in 2017. CSB wrapped up the day with a 13-1, five-inning win over Coe College to push its record to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in Tucson.

Saint Benedict jumped all over Trine (8-2) early, but the dagger came in the second inning when Claire Boatman hit a grand slam over the center field fence to make it 8-0. The four-run shot marked the first of the year for Boatman, and was one of three homers on the day for CSB.

Kate Deming and Megan Toninato singled to start the game, and both came around to score on a two-run double from Emilie Antony. CSB went up by eight runs thanks to a six-run second inning. Deming scored on an RBI single from Toninato, Antony singled and Sara Wennerstrand walked, and all three came in to score on Boatman's homer.

The Thunder scored a pair of runs in the third inning, and added a third run in the fourth inning, but Smith walked and scored on an RBI sac fly by Deming in the fifth, and after Trine added one more run in the fifth, Wennerstrand hit a solo homer in the sixth to wrap up the scoring.
