CSB hosts Saint Mary's Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team continues the MIAC season this Saturday, Jan. 14, when it hosts Saint Mary's University in Claire Lynch Hall. Game time is set for 3 p.m. as CSB battles for third place in the MIAC standings.

About the Cardinals

Saint Mary's is 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC heading into Saturday's game. The Cardinals' latest game was an 81-79 victory at Augsburg Wednesday night. Brandi Blattner leads the team with 15.3 points per game and is first in the league in rebounding at 10.4 rebounds per game. Sam Jones and Emma Schafer both average double-digits in scoring, and Schaffer leads the MIAC with 76 assists. Saint Mary's is coming off a 2015-16 season where it went 21-6 overall and 14-4 in the MIAC.

Last Season

CSB and Saint Mary's faced off two times last season, and the Cardinals won both of those contests. Saint Mary's won the first matchup of the season 75-67 in St. Joseph. Morgan Meritt had a career high 18 points and five rebounds in the loss. CSB lost 61-53 later in the season in St. Joseph. Niki Foken had 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Blazers.

Chelsey Guetter leads the team with 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and Niki Fokken averages 9.0 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Fokken is second in the MIAC with 17 blocks this season.

The Storyline

CSB is undefeated at home this season, and looks to pick up another home win Saturday against Saint Mary's. CSB, which got off to a hot start to the 2016-17 season, also looks to stay near the top of the conference and knock the Cardinals down a column in the MIAC standings. Bethel, CSB, and Saint Mary's are currently in a tie for third place in league standings. Looking ahead, CSB will be back home for another conference game Wednesday, Jan. 18, when it hosts Hamline University at 7 p.m.
