CSB softball opens MIAC play at SMU

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team opens its MIAC season Wednesday at Saint Mary's, after having to reschedule with Concordia due to weather on Saturday. CSB plays Saint Mary's at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in Winona.

About the Cardinals: The Saint Mary's Cardinals will be coming into the matchup against the blazers after starting the season 12-6. Last season the Cardinals had an overall record of 18-20, and were 11-11 in the MIAC. Brittney Birkhauser leads the Cardinals in runs scored, home runs, and RBIs. Ashley Betzold is the team's top pitcher with a 1.92 ERA and eight wins.

Last Year: Last season the Blazers split in a doubleheader at home against the Cardinals. The Cardinals took it to the Blazers in the first game winning 13-4; the Blazers had five errors in the game. The Blazers came back and battled in the second game and won 3-1, despite being out-hit 9-6 at the plate.

The Storyline: The Blazers will look to improve on their 12-6 record. As they head into their matchup against the Cardinals, they will be looking to get off on the right foot in the start of the conference season. With the second-best team batting average in the MIAC, the Blazers will be relying on their bats to try and sweep the Cardinals on the road.

Who to Watch: Megan Toninato will be looking to stay hot at the plate leading the team with a .467 batting average. Sara Wennerstrand leads the MIAC with 33 RBIs. Kate Deming leads the MIAC with 12 stolen bases on the season. Cassie Meyer leads the pitchers with a 2.59 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and a 6-3 record.

Last Time Out: The Blazers split wins in a doubleheader against St. Scholastica last Sunday. The Blazers matched the Saints' four runs in the fourth inning, but went silent the rest of the game and fell 6-4. In the second game the Blazers played great in the field, only giving up six hits and no had errors. The Blazers won the second game by a score of 5-4. Kiela DeVlaeminck pitched a complete game for the Blazers in their win. Deming went 3-for-6 at the plate and Toninato went 4-for-6 on the day.
