ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team heads into the final week of the regular season ready to play three MIAC doubleheaders in three days. The Blazers are at Macalester Saturday, and then are back at home Sunday and Monday to host St. Thomas and Carleton.
The three doubleheaders mark three of CSB's last four doubleheaders of the regular season. Heading into the three-game stretch, the Blazers are 19-13 overall and in sixth in the MIAC with a 7-7 record. The top four teams in the conference earn a spot in the league's postseason tournament.
The Schedule: CSB is in St. Paul to take on Macalester Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m. The Blazers are back at home Sunday, April 24, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against No. 13 St. Thomas, and then again Monday, April 25, for a 3:30 p.m. makeup game against Carleton.
The Opponents: Macalester is tied for ninth in the MIAC at 4-10 and is 11-21 overall, but the Scots are not to be overlooked. Wednesday, Macalester upset the Tommies 6-5, handing St. Thomas its second MIAC loss of the year. The Tommies head into the weekend in the top 15 in Division III and leading the MIAC with a 14-2 mark. St. Thomas is 27-5 overall. Carleton heads into the weekend with an 8-22 overall record and is in 12
th in the MIAC with a 2-12 record.
Last Year: CSB split with Macalaster in a game that had to be finished days later due to rain. The Scots won the first game 3-1, but CSB won the second 5-4 in nine innings. The Blazers also split with St. Thomas, which was ranked No. 12 in Division III at the time. SCB won the first game 2-1 thanks to a walkoff RBI double by
Becky Gigstad, but the Tommies won the second game 8-0 in six innings. Saint Benedict swept Carleton in 2015, winning both games 11-3.
The Storyline: St. Thomas enters the weekend looking to hold onto its No. 1 spot in the MIAC, the Blazers are trying to make their way up into the top four and Macalester and Carleton are both trying to end their seasons on a high note.
Who to Watch: First year
Madison Mikolich had a big first game for the Blazers in their split of Hamline Wednesday. She finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and her third home run of the season.
Cassie Meyer picked up her eighth win of the season.
Sara Wennerstrand led the team with a pair of hits in the second game. She leads the league in RBIs and
Kate Deming,
Megan Toninato and Wennerstrand are second, third and fourth, respectively, in the MIAC in total hits.
