MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Four different players hit home runs to help lead the College of Saint Benedict softball team to a sweep of Augsburg College Wednesday afternoon.
Nicole Nelson,
Kate Deming and
Sara Wennerstrand hit homers in CSB's 8-4 win in the first game and
Karlee Pfaff hit one over the fence in CSB's 12-1, six-inning win in the second game.
The sweep marks the second straight for Saint Benedict, which is now 17-9 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC. The Blazers are on a four-game winning streak heading into the weekend, when they play two more conference doubleheaders.
CSB got on the board early in the first game thanks to Wennerstrand's two-run homer in the first inning. Augsburg made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, and tied the game in the third. The Blazers scored two more runs on an Auggie error and a wild pitch in the fourth, but Augsburg tied the game right away again in the bottom of the inning.
Nelson scored the eventual game-winner with a solo homer – her second in as many games – in the sixth inning, and Deming hit a two-run homer in the seventh, the first home run of her college career. CSB scored its final run of the game on an Augsburg error.
Deming finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Wennerstrand and Nelson each added a pair of hits.
Kiela DeVlaeminck threw the first four innings and gave up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts, and
Claire Haddick picked up the first win of her CSB career after throwing three scoreless innings to wrap up the game. She didn't give up a single hit and struck out four batters.
Deming singled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to start the second game and give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but that was its only run of the game. Saint Benedict broke the game open in the fourth with five runs on four hits and three Auggie errors. Pfaff hit a two-run homer – the first of her Blazer career – and
Megan Toninato and
Becky Gigstad each had an RBI single.
The Blazers added six more runs in the sixth inning to end the game early. Nelson hit a two-run double and Wennerstrand and Pfaff each had an RBI single.
Wennerstrand went 4-for-4 to lead CSB, which had 16 hits. Pfaff had two hits and three RBIs and Deming and
Madison Mikolich each added two hits. Haddick picked up the second win of her career after giving up a single run on three hits in four innings of work.
Victoria Ofsthun and
Cassie Meyer each threw one scoreless inning in relief.
The Blazers continue their busy week Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Northfield to take on St. Olaf. They wrap up the week at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 17, against Bethel.
