CSB softball takes on UW-Stout

Live Stats | Listen Live

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –The College of Saint Benedict softball team opened up its season last week in a doubleheader against the University of Dubuque and Coe College. Friday, the Blazers will be in St. Cloud to face off against UW-Stout for a nonconference doubleheader. The games will take place at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Friday in the SCSU Husky Dome on the St. Cloud State campus.

About the Blue Devils: The Blazers will be the first game of the season for the Blue Devils. Last season the Blue Devils had an overall record of 16-27, and were 7-9 in the WIAC. They made it to the second round of the WIAC tournament before getting knocked out in the double elimination.

Last Year: In a double header last year the Blazers swept the Blue Devils in the two teams' only meeting. CSB managed to get out to an early five-run lead after three innings and beat the Blue Devils 5-3 in the first game on Feb. 14. Kiela DeVlaeminck pitched a complete game and did not give up an earned run. In the second game of the day, the Blazers 10-run ruled the Blue Devils in five innings, for a final score of 12-1. The Blazers had 16 hits.

The Storyline: A young Blazers team will look to improve off of a 22-18 record and missed MIAC playoffs last season. As they head into this matchup, they will be looking to continue where they left off against the Blue Devils in last season's matchup. The CSB team will be searching for its identity before heading to Florida for 12 games over spring break.

Who to Watch: Megan Toninato will be looking to stay hot at the plate after going 4-for-5 with a double in the first two games of the season. First year Claire Haddick struck out two batters in one inning of work in her first collegiate pitching appearance. After giving up six runs in both of the first two games, the defense will be looking to limit UW-Stouts scoring opportunities.

Last Time Out: In the first game of the season, Saint Benedict held off a seventh-inning rally by Dubuque to win 7-6. The Blazers started out the game hot at the plate, scoring four runs in the first inning and two in the second inning. Dubuque also started off the game scoring three runs in the first inning but were held quiet until they fell short on a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Cassie Meyer pitched a complete game for the Blazers. She gave up two earned runs on 10 hits and five strikeouts. Up one run, with a runner on third and two outs, Meyer struck out the final batter to seal the Blazers' first win of the season. In their second game of the season, the Blazers took a tough loss as they fell to Coe College by a score of 6-2. The Blazers struggled to put runs on the board early. CSB put up two runs in the sixth inning, but it was too little, too late. In the double header Toninato recorded four hits, DeVlaeminck had three and Claire Boatman had two for the Blazers.
