CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 9-1, six-inning win over Thomas College (Maine) Sunday morning in Clermont, Fla.
Sophomore pitcher
Victoria Ofsthun picked up her first collegiate win and first year
Madison Mikolich hit the first home run of her college career to lead the Blazers, who finished 8-4 in Florida and are 11-5 overall heading into MIAC play.
Thomas hit a solo homer in the second to start the game and take a 1-0 lead, but that's the only run the Terriers would score.
Sara Wennerstrand hit a two-run single and
Karlee Pfaff added an RBI single in the third inning to make it 3-1 in the third, and Wennerstrand hit into an RBI groundout and Pfaff had an RBI sac fly in the fifth to make it 5-1.
CSB ended the game early thanks to a four-run sixth inning. Mikolich led off the inning with a solo homer, and
Haley Olson singled and then came around to score on a wild pitch.
Megan Toninato had an RBI triple, and
Claire Haddick ended the game with an RBI single.
Wennerstrand finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Toninato was 2-for-3. Pfaff also sent in a pair of RBIs. CSB had 10 total hits. Ofsthun threw all six innings and gave up a single run on four hits and she struck out four batters in her collegiate debut.
The Blazers return to Minnesota Monday evening, and are scheduled to start conference play Saturday, April 2, with a home doubleheader against Concordia. Weather pending, CSB hosts St. Scholastica Sunday, April 3.
