CSB splits two to open 2016

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball teams split a pair of games Saturday night at the RCTC Dome in Rochester to kick off 2016. The Blazers beat Dubuque 7-6 to start the year, and lost 6-2 to Coe in the nightcap, which ended around 1 a.m. due to earlier games running late.

In the Dubuque game, the Blazers scored four runs in the first inning to snag an early lead. Kiela DeVlaeminck had an RBI single, and Karlee Pfaff sent two more runs in with a long single in her first at-bat of the season. Claire Boatman also had an RBI single in the first at-bat of her college career to put CSB up 4-0.

Dubuque answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Sara Wennerstrand had an RBI double and DeVlaeminck grounded out but sent in a run in the second to make it 6-3. Dubuque added a single run in the fourth to make it 6-4, and CSB scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth on an RBI sac fly by Megan Toninato. Dubuque scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but Cassie Meyer struck out the final batter to leave a runner stranded on third.

Toninato and DeVlaeminck each had two hits for CSB and DeVlaeminck sent in two runs. Saint Benedict had 11 hits and Dubuque finished with 10. Meyer threw all seven innings to pick up her first win of the year. She gave up six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

In the second game of the night, Coe scored once in the top of the first, and held a 1-0 lead for three innings before adding a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Kohawks made it 6-0 with a three-run sixth inning, but the Blazers' offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth.

Toninato doubled to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Wennerstrand. Wennerstrand came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-2, but that's as close as CSB could get.

Toninato added two more hits to her season total. CSB had six hits to Coe's 16. DeVlaeminck threw the first six innings and took the loss. She gave up six runs on 14 hits with one strikeout. Claire Haddick threw the final inning and gave up two hits and struck out two batters.

CSB is back in action Friday, March 4, when it takes on UW-Stout at the Husky Dome on the SCSU campus. That nonconference doubleheader marks the last competition before the Blazers head to Florida for spring break.
