CSB looks to get back on track against Gustavus

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –The College of Saint Benedict basketball team suffered its third consecutive loss Saturday by a score of 61-50 to Concordia in its last away game of the regular season. The Blazers head home to face off against Gustavus for the first of their last two games of the regular season. This game will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Claire Lynch Hall.

Wednesday's game is also Faculty Night, and all CSB|SJU faculty and their families are welcome and invited to attend and register for door prizes.
 
Heading into Wednesday's game, CSB is 14-9 overall and in sixth in the MIAC with a 9-7 record. The Blazers are just ahead of Augsburg in the standings, and defeated the Auggies earlier this season. CSB hosts Augsburg Saturday to end the regular season. Gustavus is one of four teams to have already secured a berth in the postseason tournament. St. Thomas, Saint Mary's and Concordia also locked up a spot already.
 
About the Gusties: After starting the season with a record of 3-2, the Gusties went on to take five consecutive wins in conference play. After winning nine of their last 11 games, the Gusties will be heading into their matchup against the Blazers with a 17-6 overall record and a 12-4 conference record. With their 75-41 win over Hamline last weekend, the Gusties have already captured a spot in the MIAC post-season. Mikayla Miller is fifth in the league in scoring (15.5) and Lindsey Johnson is fourth in the MIAC with a .449 three-point percentage.
 
Earlier This Year: The Blazers already have one win against the Gusties this season. CSB outscored Gustavus 15-6 in overtime to defeat the Gusties 70-61 in St. Peter on Jan. 20. The game was tied at 55-55 at the end of regulation, but Chelsey Guetter and Annie Dittberner each had five points in OT to help CSB pull away for the win. Guetter and Alison Newton both had 12 points and Macy Kelly added 11. The Blazers held Gustavus to a 36 percent clip from the field.
 
The Storyline: The Blazers currently sit in the No. 6 spot in the MIAC after dropping three consecutive conference games. As they head into this matchup, they will be fighting for one of the few remaining playoff spots with only one other chance for a MIAC win this season. With a playoff spot already locked down, the Gusties will head into this matchup looking for another win to help push them into sole possession of third place in the conference, as they currently share it with Concordia.
 
Who to Watch: Niki Fokken currently leads the Blazers with 10.5 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game as Dittberner averages another 8.3 points in each game. Guetter also averages 6.7 rebounds and 6.9 points per games and Grace Wolhowe is currently No. 2 in the MIAC with a .463 three-point percentage.
 
Last Time Out: In their last time out, the Blazers took a tough loss during their trip out to Moorhead, Minn., as they fell to Concordia by a score of 61-50. The Blazers came out strong in the Blazers came out strong in the first quarter, but trailed by a score of 11-9 heading into the second. Here, the Cobbers increased their lead by another three points and sat with a 26-20 lead heading into halftime. In the third quarter, the Cobbers came out strong and extended their lead by six more points after holding the Blazers to 12 points and taking 18 points. The Blazers bounced back in the fourth quarter and took another 17 points, but were unable to overcome their deficit. Guetter led the offense with 13 points and also finished the night with eight rebounds. Fokken and Wolhowe also added another eight points each.
