Blazer basketball ends season with win over Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team ended the 2014-15 season on a high note Saturday afternoon, defeating Gustavus 69-60 in St. Peter, Minn.

The Blazers were eliminated from the MIAC playoffs with a loss to Augsburg Wednesday night, but didn't let that stop them from coming out strong Saturday afternoon. CSB (12-13, 9-9) got off to a hot start and went on a 10-3 run to start the game. The Blazers kept their lead around eight points to start the first half, and a three by Jordan Falk and a jumper by Mattie Lueck pushed CSB's lead to 11, 22-11, with 8:35 left in the first half.

Baskets by Abby Miller and Alison Newton put Saint Benedict up 13, 28-15, with 4:04 left in the first half, and the Blazers held on to a 32-23 lead heading into halftime.

Fokken hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second half and spark a 19-8 run that ended with a 48-29 lead for the Blazers with just over 14 minutes left in the game. Lueck hit a three to end the run and give CSB a 19-point lead.

A three by Miller pushed CSB's lead to 20 for the first time, 51-31, and the Blazers were able to maintain a double-digit lead until the Gusties hit a three in the final 20 seconds of the game.

Lueck finished with 21 points and five rebounds to pace CSB, which shot 50.9 percent from the field, including 56.5 percent in the second half. Fokken added 12 points and five rebounds and Annie Dittberner finished with 11 points. Falk added seven points, five rebounds and five assists in her final game with the Blazers.

Saint Benedict finished the day 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. The Blazers had 30 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Mikayla Miller led Gustavus (17-8, 11-7) with 20 points. Miranda Rice added 12 and Hannah Howard finished with 11. Steph Klockmann had seven rebounds. The Gusties shot 40 percent from the field, and shot just 33.3 percent in the first half. Gustavus went 12-for-16 from the line and had 33 rebounds and 20 turnovers.

Saturday's game was the last game for the Blazers' three seniors: Falk, Emily Lueck and Elena Koch. The win also avenged one of CSB's MIAC losses from earlier this season. Gustavus used a late run to beat the Blazers 55-52 Jan. 17 in St. Joseph. The Gusties already clinched a playoff berth and find out later this weekend who their first-round opponent in the MIAC tournament will be.
