ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team bounced back from a tough loss Friday night to finish a two-game series with Concordia College with a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers, who gave up 10 goals in a 10-2 loss Friday, looked like a different team on the ice Saturday. CSB's defense held strong and kept the Cobbers off the board but for a lone goal in the second period. Senior goalie
Jenna Traut was solid in the net, stopping 35 of 36 shots she faced, including six in the overtime period.
Neither team scored in a fast-paced first period. The Cobbers (4-10-1, 3-4-1 MIAC) put up 11 shots on goal, but Traut stopped all 11 and the game was scoreless heading into the second. Concordia broke the tie just over six minutes into the second when Tori Davis grabbed a rebound off a Blazer shot and skated the length of the ice to score an unassisted goal and put Concordia up 1-0.
The score stayed in Concordia's favor until there were just over five minutes left in the third period when
Elli Marvin got a hold of a loose puck in front of the Concordia net and poked it in to tie the score 1-1.
Liz Hermes and
Megan Brettingen were credited with the assists.
Both teams had ample opportunites to score in the third period as Saint Benedict (4-7-1, 3-4-1) put up 12 shots and the Cobbers had eight, but both goalies were strong. The game was scoreless after regulation, and the two teams combined for nine shots on goal in the five-minute sudden death overtime, but Traut and Cobber goalie Andrea Klug each had several big saves and the game ended in a tie.
Marvin finished with a team-high five shots on goal for CSB, which had 27 total shots.
Brigette Miller added four shots on goal, including three in the third period. Traut finished with 35 saves and Klug had 26 for Concordia.
The Blazers are back in action Friday, Jan. 23, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for the first of a two-game series with St. Kate's. CSB and the Wildcats play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and the Blazers are back at home against St. Kate's at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
