Blazer basketball tries to get back on track against Gustavus

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team returns home Saturday, Jan. 17, after falling to Saint Mary's this week by a score of 63-59. The Blazers face off against Gustavus Saturday at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch Hall.

About the Gusties: The Gusties improved their record to 11-3 this week after beating Concordia by a score of 64-57. Since starting their season 4-2, the Gusties went on a six-game winning streak before their loss to Saint Mary's last week. With a conference record of 4-2, the Gusties will be fighting to build momentum as they head into the middle of conference play.

Who to Watch: Mattie Lueck is currently leading the offense with an average of 13.5 points per game. She is also leading the team in rebounds with 7.1 per game and assists with 2.7 per game. Abby Miller is also averaging 9.7 points per game and leads the team with a .844 free throw percentage. Emily Lueck is also sitting with 8.1 points per game and 2.3 assists per game.

The Storyline: The Blazers' recent loss to Saint Mary's stopped a three-game winning streak. The Blazers will be looking to regain their momentum as they push through a tough upcoming stretch of games. The Gusties also will be looking to pick up some wins as they reach the middle of their conference season.

Last Year: Last year, the Blazers split two games with the Gusites. In the first matchup of the season, the Blazers walked away with a 76-73 win. After a 36-30 lead at halftime, the Blazers held a Gusties comeback to three points short. Mattie Lueck finished the game with 18 points and six rebounds and Annie Dittberner added another 11 points. The Gusties took a 61-58 win in the second meeting of the season as Dittberner led the Blazers with 13 points.

Last Time Out: In their last time out, the Blazers fell to Saint Mary's by a score of 63-59. This loss brought their record to 7-7 and they now sit with a 4-3 conference record. After leading at halftime by a score of 32-30, the Blazers couldn't hold off the Cardinals as they edged out the win in a close game. Mattie Lueck led the Blazers with 20 points and four rebounds as Niki Fokken finished the night with nine points and eight rebounds.
