Europe-Tested Hockey Team Ready for Cobbers

The College of Saint Benedict Hockey team (4-6, 3-3 MIAC) will have their first opportunity to show off the moves they learned in Europe tomorrow (Jan. 16th), as they host Concordia-Moorhead in a Friday-night Saturday-afternoon doubleheader.

The Schedule:
Friday: Concordia @ Saint Benedict, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16th, Municipal Athletic Complex, St, Cloud, MN
Saturday: Concordia @ Saint Benedict, 1:35 p.m., Saturday Jan. 17th, Municipal Athletic Complex, St. Cloud, Minn.

The Records:
CSB: 4-6 (3-3 MIAC)
CC: 3-10 (2-4- MIAC)

About the Cobbers: After advancing to the MIAC semi-finals last year, the Cobbers were picked to finish fourth in the conference this year. They have played a rough schedule so far, already having played the top three teams in the MIAC in their first three conference matchups. Despite those tough matchups, they emerged with two wins in split series against Bethel and St. Thomas. They have lost three straight and are 1-7 on the road.

Who to Watch:
CSB:
So. F Elli Marvin (Tied for team lead with five goals, four assists and nine points)
So. F Stephanie Kirk (Tied with Marvin for team lead with five goals, four assists and nine points)
Jr. F Siri Berg-Moberg (Leads the squad in plus-minus at +5)

CC:
So. F Amber Schaack (Leads the Cobbers with five goals this season)
Sr. D Libby Fransdal (All-MIAC defender in 2013-14)
So. G Andrea Klug (Fourth in the MIAC with 204 total saves)

Storyline: After a rough first-half of the season, the Cobbers are no doubt hoping to sweep the Blazers to get themselves back on track to make the playoffs. The Blazers however, are currently on the bubble to make the playoffs as well, sitting in sixth place with only one point separating them from seventh place St. Catherine (Six teams make the playoffs). With a tough schedule looming ahead, the Blazers will be much more comfortable if they escape the weekend with a win or two and keep themselves on the inside looking out in the MIAC playoff race.

Last Year: The Cobbers got the best of the Blazers last year, sweeping both games by 3-0 margins. The Cobber offense was overpowering that weekend, as they outshot the Blazers 68-to-46. In both games the Blazers gave up early first-period goals to give themselves an early deficit. Key to the win tomorrow and Saturday will be to get on the board first and avoid having to play from behind against the experienced Cobbers.

Last Time Out: The Blazers spent their winter break traveling through Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. In three games against European club teams they went 2-1 and outscored their opponents 17-9. While the team wasn't on the ice, they packed their days with sightseeing and enjoying all Europe had to offer, including ringing in the New Year in Milan.
