Moorhead, Minn. – The Saint Benedict softball team used early runs and big innings to score a sweep over Concordia today (Apr. 5), winning 4-0 in game one, and 10-4 in game two.
The Blazers had the luxury of being the "home" team in each game, as they were originally scheduled to play the games at CSB, but poor field conditions forced the move.
The Blazers (16-5, 3-3 MIAC) never needed their last at-bats, though, as they never trailed in game one, and led from the fifth inning on in game two.
In the first game, the Blazers got on the board right away in the first, with a sac fly from
Kelsey McQuillan (Stillwater, Minn.) scoring
Kim Lidstone (Minnetonka, Minn.). Lidstone scored again in the third and the Blazers added two more in the fifth for the final 4-0 score.
Emily Engelmeier (South St. Paul, Minn.) threw a complete game three-hitter, striking out five while walking none to improve to 9-0 on the year.
In the second game, it was the Cobbers (5-16, 0-4 MIAC) who scored first, taking a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning, and holding a lead until the Blazers tied it in the third.
Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, Minn.) lined a single up the middle to score
Lexi Alm (Stacy, Minn.) and
Stacy Svihel (Cold Spring, Minn.) to knot the game at 3-3.
In the fifth the Blazers blew the game open with a six-run inning, coming off a pair of three-run homeruns from Wenner and
Maddie Lenker (Eden Prairie, Minn.).
Wenner added another homer in the seventh for the final tally of the game and the Blazers were on their way to a 10-4 win. She finished the game 3-for-4 with two homeruns, two runs scored and six RBI.
Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, Minn.) struck out seven and walked none in working the complete game, and the Blazers have now won three of their last four heading into their match-up tomorrow at No. 17 St. Thomas. First pitch in St. Paul is 2 p.m.
