Â
St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict softball team dropped its conference-opening doubleheader today (Mar. 29), falling 10-8 and 12-11 on the road to Macalester.
Â
The Blazers (13-4, 0-2 MIAC) also see their nine-game winning streak snapped with their losses, falling for the first time since Mar. 2.
Â
The Scots (10-6, 2-0 MIAC), meanwhile, snap out of a three-game losing streak, and get their first win since Mar. 20.
Â
CSB held leads in each game – and held them late. In the first game, it was a seven-run, fifth-inning by Macalester that turned a three-run Blazer lead into a four-run Scot advantage at 10-6. CSB would get two more back in the sixth, but it wasn't enough in the 10-8 loss.
Â
Then in the second game, the Blazers held a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Macalester strung together four hits to send home five runs and take the win. Game two ended in walk-off fashion with an RBI double, the sixth straight batter to reach base in the inning.
Â
The Blazers out-hit the Scots in each of the day's two contests, finishing with a 27-to-22 edge in total on the day.
Â
Melissa Seldon (Rosemount, Minn.) led the way at the plate, charting a team best five hits on the day, including three in game two.
Kim Lidstone (Minnetonka, Minn.) added four, including a 3-for-4 day in game two, and scored three times.
Lexi Alm (Stacy, Minn.) crossed the place five times, and added three hits and two RBI.
Â
The Blazers racked up a season high 16 in game two, while their 11 runs were the second best all season.
Â
Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, Minn.) suffered both losses, as she pitched the entire first game, allowing five earned runs, and entered in relief in the seventh inning of game two, and was stung for the final three runs.
Â
The Blazers won't have long to dwell on the losses, as they must turn right around tomorrow (Mar. 29) and hit the road to take on Gustavus. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in St. Peter.
