Rosemount, Minn. – The Saint Benedict softball team swept its doubleheader with Carleton tonight (Apr. 10), scoring the first win by one run in eight innings, 5-4, and the second by a 10-1 blowout in just six innings.
Rachael Nelson took wins in both games, throwing two shutout innings to close out game one, before throwing all six innings in the second game, while allowing just one run to improve to 7-4 on the year.
The Blazers (13-7, 2-2 MIAC) finished with 19 total hits in the day, and handed the Knights (10-11, 5-3 MIAC) their first losses since Mar. 29, snapping a four-game winning streak.
Mackenzie Wenner led the way with four hits in the day, while
Emily Engelmeier led the way with four RBI. Five different players had hits in the first game, while six players had at least one hit in the second game.
In the first game, Knights jumped out ahead after one run in the bottom of the first. They held the lead until the Blazers tied the game with
Lexi Alm's solo homerun in the top of the fourth. Then, over the next two innings the Blazers added three more, capped by a homerun from Engelmeier in the sixth to put the Blazers ahead 4-1.
The Knights didn't stay down long, though, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a two-RBI double to tie the game.
The game remained tied until they went to the eighth, where Alm smashed her second homer of the day, and then in the bottom of the inning, Nelson struck out the final two batters to close out the win.
In the second game, the Blazers trailed after the first inning after allowing one run because of some successful small ball by the Knights. That would be the only time the Knights would lead, however. The Blazers came back in the second inning to hit back-to-back homeruns off the bats of Wenner and Engelmeier, putting the Blazers ahead 2-1 and they never looked back.
The hitters for Saint Benedict put up a three-spot in the following inning while pitcher
Rachel Nelson continued pitching an efficient game. The fifth inning was disastrous for Carleton starter, Micaela LaRose when she let up back-to-back homeruns once again to Wenner and Engelmeier. First year
Nicole Nelson added to the onslaught with a three run homerun in the sixth inning and making the game a 10-1 beating.
Mackenzie Wenner ended the game 2-4 with three RBI and two homeruns while the batter right behind her ended the game 2-2 with three RBI and two homeruns as well.
The Blazers are now off tomorrow, as their Apr. 11 doubleheader at St. Catherine has been moved to Apr. 25. Their next scheduled to host Concordia on Apr. 13, but with the weather playing its own game with the schedule, be sure to check with CSBBlazers.com for any cancellations or postponments.
