Starting the Second Half: After a nice day off, the Saint Benedict softball team returns to play at the National Training Center Spring Games today (Mar. 27), playing doubleheaders each of the next three days as they close out the spring trip. The Blazers enter at 6-4 on the year, which included a 4-2 mark through the first half of the trip.
About Wisconsin-River Falls: The Blazers and Falcons play at 2 p.m., Mar. 27 … currently 10-4 on the year, with a 2-2 mark in Florida … 1-3 against the MIAC this season, beating Augsburg, but falling to Saint Mary's and St. Olaf … placed third in the WIAC last season with a 10-6 conference record, going 34-15 overall … ended the 2012 season in the championship game of the NCAA Regional, falling to region champ Luther 3-2 … 2012 WIAC Tournament Champion.
About Kalamazoo: The Blazers and Hornets play at 4 p.m., Mar. 27 … currently 3-3 in the year, already beating last season's win total … all six games have been played in Clermont … finished last in the MIAA last season, with just a 1-15 conference record, going 2-28 overall … one of two wins last season came against St. Kate's … closed season on 10-game losing streak … twice last season went through three-game stretches without scoring a run.
About Loras: The Blazers and Duhawks play at 10 a.m., Mar. 28 … currently 4-5 on the season, winning twice their last time out over St. Olaf and Oneonta State … opened season with three straight losses, but has went 4-2 since … finished in a fifth place tie in the IIAC last season with a 7-9 conference record, while going 20-18 overall … did not play a MIAC team last season.
About Buena Vista: The Blazers and Beavers play at 12 p.m., Mar. 28 … currently 7-5, which included a 17-14 win over No. 6 Eastern Connecticut State on Mar. 26 … most recently lost 17-0 to UW-Whitewater … also beat another top-25 team in No. 14 Carthage, 1-0 … finished in a fifth place tie in the IIAC last season with a 7-9 conference record, while going 17-17 overall … opened 2012 campaign with a 4-2 win over MIAC power St. Thomas … also swept St. Olaf and split with St. Kate's last season.
About Colby: The Blazers and Mules play at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., Mar. 29 … currently 3-3 on the season, which includes a 10-4 win over St. Kate's on Mar. 26 … have scored at least nine runs in each of their three wins, but allowed at least six in each loss … placed fifth in the NESCAC East last season with a 2-10 conference record, while going 12-20 overall … played in the same conference as DIII World Series team Tufts, playing three close games last season, including an 11-inning one-run loss.
Last Time Out: In the first half of the trip, the Blazers
swept through Southern Maine and Oneonta State (N.Y.) 12-4 and 4-3 respectively. On day
two they fell 7-6 to UW-Whitewater before beating Western Connecticut State 6-4. Finally on day
three the lost 4-1 to No. 7 Luther before rebounding with a 9-4 win over UW-Stevens Point.
Up Next: We'll see if the weather cooperates, but upon returning to Minnesota the Blazers are set to play their first home game on Apr. 2, when Macalester is scheduled to come to St. Joseph to open MIAC play.
