Clermont, Fla. – The Saint Benedict softball team split for the second straight day today (Mar. 25), but continued its run of playing quality ball in falling 4-1 to No. 7 Luther before beating Wisconsin-Stevens Point 9-4.

Entering as the seventh ranked team in the country, Luther was kept in check in the first game of the day, as the Blazers (6-4) gave the Norse one of their most competitive games of the year. Then in the second game, the Blazer offense opened up for nine runs, giving UW-Stevens Point just its second loss of the season, while snapping a 11-game Pointer winning streak.

Emily Engelmeier threw the complete game in taking the loss against the Norse, allowing just six hits and three earned runs. In helping her own cause, the Blazers lone run came from her solo home run in the third.

The Norse got all four of their runs from their two leadoff hitters, as each scored twice, starting with a 1-0 lead after the first, before adding two in the third and one final run in the fifth.

All four of the Blazer's hits in the game came from different players, with Engelmeier and Lexi Alm each adding a walk to their day.

As they did yesterday, the Blazers regrouped in game two to salvage the split on the day, this time handing the Pointers their first loss in Florida, and just their second loss all season.

Rachel Nelson went the distance for the win, holding the Pointers to just one through the first six innings, only allowing the final three after the Blazers had the game in control with a 9-1 advantage. She scattered 10 hits in the day, and allowed just one walk, while striking out two.

The Pointers got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the second, but the Blazers came back with three in the top of the third to take a lead they would never lose. All three runs came with two outs, after breaking up a perfect game by the Pointers through the first eight outs.

After a single run in the fifth, the Blazers broke the game open with four in the sixth, eventually adding one more for good measure in the seventh.

Kimberly Lidstone continued her hot start with a 2-for-4 day, scoring three times, while Alm went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.

The Blazers get a well-deserved day off tomorrow, and then return to action on Mar. 27 to start another set of six games over three days as they close out their time in Florida.
