Â
Collegeville, Minn. – The Saint Benedict swimming and diving team fell 150-93 to St. Thomas on Dec. 14, wrapping up the first half of the season.
Â
In a meet deemed the "Ugly Sweater Invite" the two teams got in the holiday spirit by showing off their best examples of obnoxious seasonal dress.
Â
After the pre-meet festivities, the teams squared off, beginning with the boards where the Blazers were led by
Megan Lawson (Rochester, Minn.) and Carissa Gaffy (Sauk Rapids, Minn.). Lawson narrowly missed a win on the one-meter board, taking second with a score of 210.25, just six points off the winner.
Â
Gaffy was a third place finisher on the three-meter board, scoring a 171.55.
Â
In the pool, the Blazers quickly got their first win, with a first place tally from
Stephanie Bierman (Apple Valley, Minn.), stopping the clock in 1:59.17 in the 200-free. She was the only one in the field to finish in under two-minutes, winning by nearly two seconds.
Â
Bierman then added to her day with her second win, coming in the 100-free. In another impressive effort, she again won by nearly two seconds, posting a 54.78.
Â
The Blazers dominance of the sprints continued in the 50-free, when they took home the top two spots, and three of the top-four.
Emily Roberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) continued her stellar senior season with a winning time of 25.72, and was tied at the top by teammate
Meghan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Â
Haley Schweitz (Stillwater, Minn.) made it three of four for CSB in the 50, with her fourth place time of 26.19.
Â
Like Bierman, Roberts made it two wins on the day with her top-time in the 100-back. An event she has had control over this season. She posted a 1:01.39, which included a sub-30 on the first 50 yards, and won by two seconds.
Â
Adding a win to the Blazers' tally was
Victoria Tormanen (Dassel, Minn.) in the 100-breast. She touched the wall in 1:09.45
Â
When it was all said and done the Blazers won five events to the Tommies eight. St. Thomas swept the boards and the relays, but in individual races, the Blazers held a 5-to-4 edge over their rivals.
Â
The Blazers will now be off for the Holidays, and will get back together just after the New Year when they head out on their annual training trip. This year they are heading to Puerto Rico from Jan. 1-9.
