Great Scot: The Blazers roll into tonight's (Jan. 23) game against Macalester riding a four-game win streak, highlighted by a 66-62 victory over the then third ranked St. Thomas Tommies. The win streak is the longest since the Blazers won 11 straight during the 2010-11 campaign. The Blazers have also won two straight against the Scots and boast a 52-6 record against the Scots since the 1981 season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
About Macalester: After graduating 73% of their scoring offense from last season, the Scots have been going through a tumultuous rebuilding process this year. After winning three-of-four games to begin the conference season, the Scots have dropped eight straight. The latest loss came 82-84 in overtime to St. Catherine's. That game was St. Catherine's first conference win of the season.
Last Season: The Blazers and Scots split the season series last season, each winning at their home gym. In the first matchup of the season in St. Paul the Scots took a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back, upending the Blazers 71-56. The Blazers got revenge in the second matchup of that year at Claire Lynch Hall, defeating the Scots 60-48. The Blazers took control of the game when
Brianna Barrett went on an eleven point scoring spree in the second half. Barrett finished with 13 to lead all scorers.
Storyline: Will the Blazers be able to return home to Claire Lynch Hall and take care of business after a successful three-game road trip? The Blazer defense should have no problem stopping the Scot offense, which averages just 51.7 points per game to the Blazers' 66.7. The Scots have had hard time spreading the ball around this season, averaging a MIAC-worst 9.7 assists per game.
Who To Watch: Barrett continues to be the Blazers leading scorer with 13.6 points per game, which places her fifth among the MIAC's leading scorer.
Whitney Canton has been hot during the current win streak, averaging 15.3 points per game over that span, including 35 over the past two wins. A big key to the Blazers winning streak has also been rebounding. In Monday's win over Carleton the Blazers were plus-11 in the rebounding margin. A big part of that success has been
Morgan Dale, who is the team's Windex with the way she cleans up the glass. She is averaging 10.3 rebounds over the past four games.
Last Time Out: On Monday the Blazers won their second game in three days in Northfield, defeating the Carleton Knights 75-63 to sweep the season series between the two teams.
Whitney Canton led all scorers with 18 points and
Morgan Dale tied a career-high with 16 rebounds, eight of them offensive.
