The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team's season came to an end Monday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. when they dropped a pair of games to top ranked University of St. Thomas. The Blazers finished the season with an overall record of 18-16 and 10-12 in the MIAC.
The Blazers dropped game one of the doubleheader 8-0 in six innings. St. Thomas outhit the Blazers 11-3 in the loss. Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) went the five and one third innings for the Blazers. Nelson struck out four batters and gave up six earned runs. Senior Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) , sophomore Maddie Lenker (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie), and first-year Katrina Siebels (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) each went 1-for-2 in game one.
Saint Benedict dropped game two of the series 4-1. The Blazers lone run came in the top of the fourth inning when first-year Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) homered to left field. Sophomore pitcher Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm) went all six innings on the mound for Saint Benedict. Johnson struck out three batters in the loss. Sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) went 3-for-3 at the plate. Wenner, the designated player, was 1-for-2 with a homerun and a walk.
Leading the Blazers on offense this season was first-year Lonnica Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Hill-Murray) and Alm. Alm ended the season with a .425 batting average, 48 hits, 29 runs scored, and 21 RBI's. She had seven doubles, three triples, eight homeruns, and six stolen bases. Johnson finished the season with .325 batting average, 37 hits, 15 runs scored, and 11 RBI's. She compiled eight doubles throughout the course of the season.
Sophomore pitchers Rachel Nelson and Trisha Johnson earned a combined 2.54 ERA in sixteen wins this season. Nelson led the Blazers in wins with 11 and gave up just 30 earned runs. She struck out 86 batters and allowed only five home runs. Johnson earned seven wins and struck out 63 batters. She allowed only nine homeruns.
