Oles End Blazers Wins Streak

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (12-6 overall, 4-2 MIAC) dropped a pair of conference games to St. Olaf (11-11 overall, 3-1 MIAC) Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.

Saint Benedict's eight game wins streak came to an end with a 0-2 loss in the first game of the double header. The Oles outhit the Blazers 6-4 to hand CSB their first conference loss of the season. Game one remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when St. Olaf picked up an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.  Saint Benedict was unable to respond and tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. St. Olaf took a 2-0 lead and the game in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI double to left center.

Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) pitched all seven innings for the Blazers. Nelson struck out eight batters and allowed only one earned run and no walks.

St. Olaf outhit the Blazers 9-8 to take game two of the series 3-2. The Oles took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI scoring single to centerfield and an unearned run. Saint Benedict was unable to answer back before St. Olaf took a 3-0 lead off another unearned run in the top of the third inning. Saint Benedict's lone run came from sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake). Alm hit her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to bring the game within two, but the Blazers eventually fell to the Oles.

Sophomore pitcher Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm) went all seven innings for Saint Benedict. Johnson allowed on one earned run while striking out six batters. First-year catcher Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) went 3-3 at the plate. Alm was 2-4 with a home run, a RBI, and a stolen base.

The Blazers return to action at 3:30 pm on Thursday April 5th, when they host conference opponent Bethel University in St. Joseph, Minn.
