The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (18-14 overall, 10-10 MIAC) dropped a pair of games to Saint Mary's University Sunday afternoon in head coach Denny Johnson's last home series as head coach.
Saint Benedict dropped game one 3-0 to the Cardinals. The game remained run less until the top of the seventh. Saint Mary's scored three runs in the top of the inning and the Blazers were not able to answer back.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) went all seven innings for Saint Benedict in the loss. Nelson gave up just eight hits and struck out three batters. First-year Lonnica Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Hill-Murray) and sophomore Kelsey McQuillan (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Nicole Kirkvold (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) was hit by a pitch.
The Blazers dropped game two 6-1 to Saint Mary's. The lone run came in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore Sarah Walch (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) that allowed sophomore Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) to score. Saint Benedict was outhit 9-2 and gave up four errors.
Going all seven innings on the mound in the loss was sophomore Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm). Johnson gave up nine hits and struck out two batters. Lonni Johnson went 1-for-3 with a double and Alm was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Saint Benedict returns to action on Monday, April 30th, at 3:30 pm when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to finish regular season play against the first seeded University of St. Thomas.
