Blazer Softball Splits Series With Cobbers

First-year Lonni Johnson

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (16-8 overall, 8-4 MIAC) split a pair of games against conference opponent Concordia College Saturday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn.

Saint Benedict took an early 5-2 lead over the Cobbers but were unable to secure the win after an eight run outburst for Concordia in the bottom of the sixth. The Blazers had 10 hits and zero errors in the first game of the series.

Sophomore Kelsey McQuillan (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) went 3-2 at the plate with a run scored and a walk. Showing her consistency at the plate was sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake). Alm was 3-2 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored. Sophomore Maddie Lenker (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) went 4-1 picking up two RBI's, a double, and a run.  Senior Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) went 3-2 in game one with a run scored. First-year catcher Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) picked up an RBI and double.

After a tough first game loss, the Blazers took the field to earn their 16th win of the season. Saint Benedict defeated the Cobbers 3-2 in game two of the double header. The game remained tied at 1 until the top of the fourth when first-year outfielder Lonnica Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Hill-Murray) singled to right field and allowed sophomore Sarah Walch (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) to score. Saint Bendict picked up their final run in the top of the seventh inning of a single to left center field from Walch that allowed Dooley to reach home. Concordia was unable to get past a strong Blazer defense before being handed their 18th loss of the season.

Earning the win on the mound for the Blazers was sophomore pitcher Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm). Johnson went all seven innings picking up five strike outs and allowing only one earned run. Lonnica Johnson was perfect at the plate, going 4-4 with a RBI, a double, a run scored, and a stolen base. Walch went 3-3 in game two of the series with an RBI, a run scored, and a double. Dooley was 4-2 with two doubles and a run scored.

Due to tomorrow's forecast, tomorrow's double header against Saint Mary's has been postponed. Stay tuned for updates on when that game will be rescheduled.
