Strong Day at Plate Earns Blazer Softball Two Wins

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (4-2 overall, 0-0 MIAC) picked up a pair of wins on day three in Kissimmee, Fla.

Saint Benedict started the day with an early afternoon game against Widener University. The Blazers defeated 4-1 to pick up their third win of the season. Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) earned the win for the Blazers on the mound. She gave up just six hits, one run, and had nine strikeouts. Sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) continued her strong play at the plate going 2-4 with a double, a run, two RBI's. Senior infielder Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) was 1-3 with two RBI's and sophomore outfielder Nicole Kirkvold (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) went 2-4. First-year outfielder Lonnica Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Hill-Murray) also contributed at the plate for the Blazers. Johnson went 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Blazers wrapped up game six of the trip with a convincing 11-1 win over Emmanuel College. On the mound for Saint Benedict was sophomore Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm). Johnson pitched all five innings for the Blazers and gave up only four hits with one unearned run and four strikeouts. Alm continued to be a threat at the plate for CSB, going 3-3 with a run scored and two RBI's. Lonicca Johnson was 2-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBI's and sophomore catcher Sarah Walch (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) went 2-3 with runs scored and an RBI. First-year Emma Zierden (Avon, MN, Albany) contributed to the Blazers success by going 3-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Saint Benedict returns to action on Wednesday, March 7th, at 9 am against Thomas More College. They will then face Waynesburg College at 11 am where they look to avenge a 3-6 loss from Saturday.
