The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (2-2 overall, 0-0 MIAC) split another pair of games to improve to 2-2 on the season after day two in Kissimmee, Fla.
Saint Benedict started the day with an early morning game against Waynesburg College of Pennsylvania. The teams remained tied 3-3 until the top of the seventh. Waynesburg earned three runs to take a 6-3 lead and handed the Blazers their second loss of the season. Sophomore pitcher Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm) went five and two third innings for the Blazers before sophomore Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) came in to get the last out. The Blazers were led on offense by sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake). Alm went 2-3 with a double and a home run over the center field fence.
The Blazers finished day two of their spring break trip with a 4-0 win over Mount Union College. Saint Benedict was led on offense by sophomore outfielders Nicole Kirkvold (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) and Lexi Alm. Kirkvold went 3-4 with a run and Alm was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs. Senior infielder Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) went 1-4 with a double and an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson went all seven innings for the Blazers. Nelson gave up one hit in the second inning and struck out 10 batters.
Saint Benedict returns to action Monday, March 5th, in Kissimmee, Fla. where they will play two more games. The first begins at 1 pm against Widener University followed by a 3 pm game versus Emmanuel College.
