Blazer Softball Ends Rebel Spring Games with a Pair of Wins

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer softball team (8-4 overall, 0-0 MIAC) wrapped up play at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. picking up two wins on the last day.

Saint Benedict started the afternoon with a hard earned 1-0 win over Husson University. Sophomore pitcher Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes) earned the win on the mound for the Blazers. Nelson went all seven innings, striking out three batters and only giving up six hits with no walks.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore center fielder Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior infielder Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) sent Alm to third on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore infielder Maddie Lenker (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) drove in the winning RBI with a ground out to second that allowed Alm to advance home and give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. Husson outhit the Blazers 6-3.


The Blazers finished their trip with a 5-2 win over Beloit College. Saint Benedict scored their first three runs in the fourth inning and their final two in the seventh. Beloit's runs came in the seventh to make the score 5-2.

Saint Benedict showed the depth of the roster as all nine batters earned a hit in the late afternoon game. First-year outfielder Katrina Siebels (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) went 2-4 with a double, two RBI's, and a run scored. Sophomore Kelsey McQuillan (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) was 1-4 with an RBI and Lenker went 2-3.  First-year catcher Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, MN, St. Peter) was 1-4 with a run scored and first-year outfielder Lonnica Johnson went 2-4. Alm continued her tenure at the plate going 1-3 with a run scored. She had a hit in every game of the Rebel Spring Games and a .553 batting average. Sophomore pitcher Trisha Johnson (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm) pitched all seven innings for the Blazers.

The Blazers return to action on Wednesday, March 28th, at 3:30 pm when they host St. Catherine University in a double header in St. Joseph, Minn.
