CSB Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games to Bethel

Junior Lis Wieneke
The College of Saint Benedict softball team was back in action Thursday night after several postponed games due to inclement weather.  Unfortunately, the Blazers found themselves on the wrong end of two close games with Bethel University.  The Blazers dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker in ten innings in the opener and fell 5-3 in the nightcap, which was shortened to five innings due to darkness.

In the opener, the Blazers got on the board in the first inning with an unearned run scored by senior Kristen Herges.  Bethel answered with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead.  After a solo homerun by junior Lis Wieneke and an RBI single from senior Alyssa Kubesh, the Blazers added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead.  The Royals answered in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run of their own to send the game into extra innings.  CSB broke the tie in the top of the tenth inning on an RBI single from senior Devin Bowlin, but Bethel put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to take the opener 7-6.

The Blazer offense collected 13 hits in the opener.  Herges, senior Abby Richardson, first-year Stacy Svihel, and Wieneke posted two hits apiece.  Svihel and Wineke each collect an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Blazers found themselves trailing 4-0 after two innings.  CSB and BU traded runs in the third inning to make the score 5-1.  The Blazers posted two unearned runs in the fifth inning to cut into the Royal's lead.  However, the game was called after the final out of the fifth inning was recorded because of darkness.

Richardson was 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the CSB offense.  Kubesh was the only other Blazer to collect a hit when she doubled in the fifth inning.

The Blazers will travel to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN on Monday, April 25 for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
