The Hamline University softball team scored 20 runs Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of the College of Saint Benedict 8-5 and 12-6 in St. Paul, MN. The Blazer offense collected 22 hits on the day, but it wasn't enough to overcome a seven-run first inning in game one for the Pipers and four Hamline homeruns in game two.
In the opener, CSB found themselves in a deep hole after Hamline's big first inning. The Blazers collected an impressive 15 hits in the game including five in the fifth inning to cut the Hamline lead to 8-4. The Blazer fifth inning was highlighted by senior
Abby Richardson's two-run homerun. In the top of the sixth inning, first-year
Lexi Alm led off the inning with a solo shot to cut the lead to 8-5, but the Pipers were able to hang on.
Senior
Kristen Herges was 3-for-5 at the plate in game one. Seniors
Devin Bowlin,
Carissa Hancock, and
Alyssa Kubesh along with first-years Alm and
Stacy Svihel each collected two hits. First-year pitcher
Trisha Johnson was once again solid in relief. Johnson entered the game in the second inning and held the Pipers to one run on two hits in five innings pitched.
In the nightcap, CSB struck first when Hancock hit a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning. After a five-run first inning for the Pipers, CSB answered with two runs of their own to tie the game at five on a two-run RBI single by Richardson However, the Piper offense continued to put runs on the board and defeated CSB 12-6.
Svihel went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, run scored, and a pair of walks, while Hancock added three RBIs to pace the CSB offense.
The Blazers host Carleton College on Saturday, April 16 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
