03/25/2011

The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a pair of games Friday evening against Division II rival St. Cloud State University at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud.  The Huskies used two big innings to take game one 6-2, and rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Blazers 8-7 in the nightcap.

In the opener, SCSU scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.  In the top of the third inning, the Blazers took advantage of a SCSU error and an RBI groundout by senior Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) to score two runs to cut the Huskies lead to 3-2.  SCSU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach for CSB.

Junior Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) took the loss on the mound for CSB going 5.2 innings, scattering eight hits, and allowing six runs, five of which were earned.  Herges and junior Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) each went 1-for-3 to lead the CSB offense.

In game two, the Blazers got on the board quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning off a two-RBI double from junior Lis Wieneke (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm).  SCSU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning before CSB answered with three runs of their own in the second inning.  Senior Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector) highlighted the CSB second inning with a two-RBI single.  The Blazers held a 7-5 lead after the top of the fifth inning, but the Huskies scored a run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh inning to take the game 8-7.

Herges went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Wieneke added three RBIs to lead the CSB offense.  The Huskies outhit the Blazers 13 to six, but CSB took full advantage of four SCSU errors.

The Blazers open up MIAC play with a doubleheader at St. Olaf College on March 30 at 4 p.m.
